Special Events
Emancipation Park Conservancy (EPC) annually produces several civic, signature events for the Houston community. These events provide an opportunity to celebrates the rich history and legacy of Emancipation Park while also creating a platform for community empowerment and engagement to build awareness, re-establish and create new partnerships, support, and collaboration at the park with Houston communities. Some of the events produced include festivals, holiday celebrations, fun runs, park beautification projects and fun runs. EPC’s goal is to provide consistent, quality, and culturally diverse experiences for park visitors.
EPC’s event attendance ranges from 2,000 to 10,000 patrons each year and the number of events is steadily growing to provide a diverse amount of options for the community. EPC also produces programming events that are recurring and these may happen weekly, monthly or quarterly.

Event Info: Saturday, June 2021; 10a-5p; Emancipation Park
Juneteenth Celebration is a signature, annual outdoor event that celebrates the rich history and legacy of Emancipation Park. The event commemorates the anniversary of former slaves’ emancipation which was on ‘Juneteenth’, June 19, 1865. It also preserves their traditions of unity, music, dance, and African American commerce. The park underwent $33.6 million of renovations in 2014. During the re-opening and rededication in 2017, the event welcomed over 10,000 attendees.

The 2nd Annual Holiday in the Tre celebration is a free virtual experience on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. on our Facebook Page. Holiday in the Tre is a signature, annual outdoor event created to celebrate the holidays while also encouraging community collaborations, economic empowerment, and awareness. The free event includes entertainment, vendors, an interactive kid’s zone, bike and toy giveaways, photos with Santa and an official holiday tree lighting. Several community partners participated with holiday activities including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Children’s Museum of Houston, Houston Southeast, and S.H.A. P.E. Community Center. The inaugural 2019 event welcomed over 5,000 attendees.

Movie in in the Tre is a re-occurring outdoor event series that happens in the Fall and Spring months to attract organic traffic to the park. This free family-friendly programming event focuses on community empowerment and engagement while also building awareness, re-establishing and creating new partnerships, support, and collaboration at the park with the Third Ward community. The series includes vendors, music, giveaways, a 28ft movie screen, and giant board games for families to enjoy. The event also provides an opportunity for some of our community partners to participate and engage with the park including Houston Independent School District, Emancipation Economic Development Council, Texas Southern University and Frenchy’s Chicken. Six films were screened in 2019 including Black Panther, Hidden Figures, and School Daze, averaging 200-400 attendees per event. In 2020, the event continued virtually reaching over 4,500 people via EPC’s social media platforms.

EPC Health and Wellness 5K Run/Walk is a signature, annual outdoor event created as a platform to address chronic health conditions in the African American community including heart disease, diabetes, obesity and hypertension. The event provides an opportunity for participants to be active while also learning about healthy living topics such as preventive care, exercising and mindful diet choices from community health partners in Third Ward.
