Lawrence Battle

Community Engagement Liaison

Lawrence Battle is a native Houstonian from Third Ward with a passion for serving his community and igniting the purpose in those around him. Lawrence earned his Bachelor of Science in Political Science, with a Minor in Economics, from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2012.

Following his undergraduate studies, Lawrence worked as a Field Organizer for Battleground Texas, where he successfully managed logistics for hundreds of volunteers and built constructive relationships between community leaders and non-profit organizations to meet the needs of the people. In 2015, Lawrence transitioned into the classroom at YES Prep White Oak, where he poured strong character, creativity, and cognition into his students as a social studies teacher and mentor. In 2018, he was highlighted by the U.S. News in an article that pushed for the prioritization in the hiring of teachers of color. At the time of the article, teachers of color made up less than 20 percent of the workforce at a time when students of color are the majority in K-12 classrooms. He spearheaded YES Prep White Oak Nation (WON) Fest in May 2018, which connected students with 30+ young professionals from numerous industries throughout the Houston area.

Lawrence views service as the fundamental prerequisite of any paradigm shift within the city of Houston communities. Lawrence has attempted to model his life and career after his favorite quote by Muhammad Ali, “service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”
